Jenny Ray is a Dallas-based abstract artist whose paintings explore the tension between instinct and restraint, memory and revision. Working primarily in acrylic, pastel, chalk and mixed media, she builds layered compositions through fields of color, gestural marks, drawing and partially obscured forms. Marks are added, erased, covered and reworked, leaving traces of earlier decisions behind.

Music is central to Ray’s process. She paints almost exclusively with headphones on, allowing rhythm, lyrics and crescendo to dictate movement while drawing from highly specific memories and lived experiences. Rather than illustrating those moments, she translates their emotional residue into something more ambiguous: nostalgia, tension, beauty, longing. The resulting paintings often feel as though something is being remembered, revised or slowly discovered.

Ray has always moved fluidly between creative disciplines. She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2015 and went on to work as a songwriter in Nashville before returning to school to earn a second B.F.A. in Interior Design. Music taught her composition, rhythm and storytelling; design sharpened her understanding of scale, proportion and restraint. Both continue to inform the way she approaches a canvas.

Her painting practice took shape in 2020 while living with her mother in her Alabama hometown. Working from her mother’s quiet artist studio during lockdown, painting became a place to disappear into time, experiment freely and follow intuition without agenda. She began sharing the work, taking commissions and gradually developing the visual language that defines her practice today.

After years spent moving between Tennessee, London, California and Texas, Ray is now based in Dallas, where she creates original work and commissions.

Her paintings are made for people who want to feel a moment expressed tangibly, even when they may never know exactly what that moment was.
